What is the LiChess to FIDE project?
This is a new project created by two intermediate competitive chess players. The goal of this project is to make it possible for non-FIDE rated players who only play online or are considering competing in over the board tournaments to calculate their FIDE ELO and to see where their game stands with regards to the FIDE rating system.
Through our local chess community we were able to recruit a number of players with established FIDE ratings to play the games for us which allows us to accuminlate the data we need to perform such calculations. We have recruited a number of FIDE rated players with varying ratings. For example, so far we have 4 players with an ELO of 2050, 2350, 1800 and 2550. We are in the pocess of recruiting more players to provide a higher rating range.
Each player will be given an account on LiChess.org and will only play rapid rated games with the time control of 15 + 10 (15 minutes with 10 seconds added each move from move 1). Once we are certain that that player's LiChess rapid rating has began to level off and stablise we will record the data and then close that account. All data gathered from those games will be posted on the page that correlates with said player's FIDE rating (located on the top of this site).
We understand that FIDE ELO ratings are calculated by FIDE based on official games played at the classical time control and not rapid time control, however if a huge majority of 2050 players playing for our project has a rapid LiChess rating of 'x' we can then start to calculate that if your LiChess rapid rating is 'x' you could be close to 2050 FIDE. We have decided to use the rapid time control as it is a medium between blitz and classical chess. The difference between a blitz rating and a FIDE rating can fluctuate more as more mistakes are made in faster time controls.
The accounts the players will be using will publicly display their FIDE rating. The players will perform no operations on their project accounts and will only use them to play games. If you have played against one of our players, please drop us a message by messaging their account and tell them your FIDE rating if you have one. The players will not choose or select specific players and will use the quick pairing system to be assigned a random opponent, however our players may request a rematch against an opponent they have already played.
Thank you for visiting us and we hope you stick around for the journey and the interesting results that come.
